Centelleo Airen-Moscatel is a great modern wine that really lets two lesser-known grapes shine.
Moscatel is globally known (Muscat), but it’s not something that is widely planted in Spain.
Airen on the other hand accounts for about a quarter of all of Spain’s grape plantings. It’s actually Spain’s most planted grape. Don’t worry, if you’ve not come across it before. It’s normally used for Brandy production or is the silent partner in blends.
Basically, in this wine Airen gives it the structure and firm body and crisp notes of green apple, whie Moscatel brings a lovely floral bouquet with hints of honey.
Centelleo was fermented at low temperatures in controlled stainless steel vats, in order to maximise the fruit profile in the wine. It then spent time ageing on its lees, in order to bring subtle autolytic qualities. So expect a zesty, zippy and fruit forward wine but you’ll detect a couple of non-fruit, savoury notes too.
A lovely, refreshing sipper. Enjoy Centelleo Airen-Moscatel either on its own or with a mild chicken and seafood paella!
