Gonzalez Byass is one of the most well known and reputable Sherry houses in Jerez. They produce a fabulous range of Sherries, in various styles. Gonzalez Byass Alfonso Olorosso is one of my favourites, as it’s dry, nutty and the perfect sipper for a cold Sunday afternoon.
Alfonso is named after King Alfonso XIII of Spain, who reigned up until 1931. It is a delicious, dry Oloroso with a deep mahogany colour, warm spicy aromas and pronounced nutty flavours. A rich, smooth wine with a long, lingering finish. The perfect partner for game, light cheese and pâté.
What Is Olorosso?
Olorosso is a style of Sherry that has been aged oxidatively. This is when the wine is allowed contact with oxygen, which slowly turns the Sherry a lovely brown colour and brings out toffee, leather, spice and walnut. It’s completely different to things like Fino Sherry, which is lighter in colour and goes through biological ageing.
Enjoy Gonzalez Byass Alfonso Olorosso with venison wellington. It won’t disappoint!
