If you’re looking for a good quality and inexpensive Shiraz then look no further. La Fama Shiraz from the Central Valley is a wine that I’ve been stocking on and off for years now and it never disappoints.
You may think that Australia is the new-world home of Shiraz/Syrah, however Chile can produce some wonderfully full-bodied, yet elegant Shiraz. This is one of them.
The reason why Chile’s Central Valley can produce such a variety of wine styles is because of the many many microclimates you’ll find there. Chile is a warm country generally but it’s narrow and you’re never too far away from the coast or a mountain range. These provide amazing conditions to help cool the overall temperature and slow down the ripening process.
This Shiraz is quite explosive. It’s full of sweet spice, it’s bursting with black fruit, it’s got lovely acidity and nice grippy tannins. However, these characteristics are nicely balanced and upon taste, the wine is lovely and smooth.
You’ll find a bit of sediment in the bottom of this wine, but don’t be put off. That’s actually a good thing! It gives the wine more character and flavour.
Pair La Fama Central Valley Shiraz with mushrooms in garlic butter and thank me later.
