Pocas LBV 2018 is a wonderful Late Bottled Vintage Port, which shows power, complexity and elegance all in one bottle.
WHAT DOES LBV (LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE) MEAN?
In very simple terms, it means it’s a vintage Port that’s been bottled later than others (duh!). I’m being slightly pedantic there, so I’ll explain a bit more.
Most entry level Ports are made up of different blends of grapes from a number of years and are generally released after no more than three years. They’re fined and filtered and are ready to drink right after release.
A vintage Port is a Port that has been made up of grapes harvested from one single year. They’re bottled after three years of ageing, normally unfiltered and meant to be aged for long periods of time. A late bottled vintage combines both approaches.
So, a late bottled vintage is a vintage Port that was bottled after four years (explains the late bottle bit in the name). This is done to give it more time to develop complexity. It is then usually filtered and fined and is meant to be ready to drink upon release. You can get different levels of LBV, so some will be released almost immediately (normally to supermarkets) but others will be allowed more time to age in the bottle before release, giving it more complexity.
WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY JAMES?
I’m saying that this is a very good LBV. It offers more quality and complexity than regular ports but doesn’t cost as much as a vintage or a colheita.
TASTING NOTES:
The striking aroma of Pocas LBV 2018 Port seduces you with hints of ripe red fruits, fruit and berry compote and flowers, flavoured with herbal and menthol notes.
On the palate, this Port offers full and rich texture. It’s powerful but is nice and balanced with sweetness that integrates perfectly.
