Domaine Lafond are a family-owned winery, dedicated to producing amazing wines with minimal intervention, so it showcases the unique terroirs of all their plots. We love their wines and have stocked a number of them over the years.
WHAT IS LIRAC?
Lirac is a place in the Southern Rhone Valley. It sits on the west bank of the Rhone river, just across from the more famous Chateauneuf du Pape. The wines here are similar in style but won’t force you into selling an organ if you buy a bottle.
WHAT DOES DOMAINE LAFOND LIRAC ROUGE TASTE LIKE?
Well, it is very much in the same style as other Southern Rhone wines. What I mean by this is it’s big. Domaine Lafond Lirac Rouge is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan & Mourvedre; four grapes that pack a punch. As Lirac is based in the south of France, it does very well to produce wines from thicker skinned grapes that need more warmth and heat to ripen properly.
With this in mind, expect brooding aromas of blackcurrant, hints of cherry and lovely spices. On the palate, you’re hit with lovely well integrated tannins and a nice fresh vibrancy from the acidity the wine has. The wine spent four months in new oak barrels so you get a lovely rounded texture to it, keeping all the structural characteristics of this wine balanced.
FOOD PAIRING:
A big wine like this really benefits from a food pairing. I’ve drunk this on it’s own before, and whilst being lovely on it really does deserve a gastronomical pairing. Game dishes in particular like wild boar would be great. However, that’s probably a bit of a stretch at your local supermarket. Toulouse sausage stew would be fantastic and a more realistic dish to pair with this.
