Yep, German Sauvignon Blanc.
I know what you’re thinking. “Sauvignon Blanc from Germany?”. You’d be right because Germany is not the place your mind goes to when you think about Sauvignon Blanc. However in recent decades there’s been a number of plantings and it now accounts for approximately 1,500 hectares of plantings across the country.
This wonderful Sauvignon comes from Pfalz. The vines are planted in limestone (kalkstein) rich soils and the result is an excellent and expressive white wine. Expect all the expressiveness of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc coupled with the restraint and elegance of French Sauvignon.
On the nose you’re met with gooseberry, mango, passionfruit and citrus notes. Upon taste, there’s a lovely minerality to this wine. This helps balance the strong exotic fruit flavours. This is an exquisite German Sauvignon Blanc and it’s a great brunch wine. Try it with smashed avocado on sourdough toast!
