Alto Los Romeros Cabernet Franc

There's definitely perks to my job. One of them is getting sent samples of fantastic wines. Sometimes they're good, sometimes they're not good and sometimes they're awful. I was sent a sample bottle of Alto Los Romeros Cabernet Franc and it wasn't good, it was GREAT!.

Cabernet Franc is such an underrated grape but we owe a lot to it. Without Cabernet Franc we wouldn't have globally renowned grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

BACKGROUND:

Alto Los Romeros Cabernet Franc is made by Luis Felipe Edwards, one of the biggest producers in Chile. Their wines range from entry level table wine to prestigious drops from only the best plots. This Cabernet Franc sits comfortably in the middle. It's from good plots in the Central Valley and is aged in oak barrels to give it complex notes.

TASTING NOTES:

This is simply fantastic. Cabernet Franc has earthy and herbal characteristics in it due to specific compounds found in the grapes. This one displays amazing aromas of plum and dark cherry, combined with spiced and toasted notes from oak barrel ageing.

On the palate, the wine is weighty with firm tannins and the finish reveals dark fruit, coffee and light vanilla flavours. This is a wine with great character and body.

    FOOD PAIRING:

I'd have this with hot smoked salmon. I don't mean spicy hot or cured smoked salmon, I mean a salmon fillet that's been smoked over coal. It's fantastic.
