Oro de Castilla Verdejo
WHAT IS VERDEJO/RUEDA?
Verdejo is a white grape variety native to Spain, renowned for producing crisp, aromatic wines with notes of citrus, herbs, and subtle bitterness. Its spiritual home is the Rueda region in North West Spain, where the continental climate and gravelly soils provide ideal growing conditions. Rueda has become synonymous with high-quality Verdejo wines, which are celebrated for their freshness, vibrant acidity, and distinctive character.
TASTING NOTES:
A lively, fresh wine with crisp elderflower, gooseberry, lime, and mineral notes. Made from Verdejo, it’s reminiscent of New Zealand Sauvignon or a warm-year Sancerre.
PRODUCER:
Bodega Hermanos del Villar is a leading Spanish winery with vineyards in Ribero del Duero and Rueda. Founded in 1955 by Pablo del Villar Escudero, the winery began with cereal crops, but shifted to grapes in 1989, starting with Verdejo and later adding Sauvignon Blanc and Tempranillo. Their main focus has always been matching grape varieties to the best soils, resulting in high quality wines. Over time, the winery expanded its vineyards and production, now growing 150 hectares of Verdejo and 15 hectares of Sauvignon in Rueda, plus 100 hectares of Tempranillo in Ribero, and producing around 700,000 bottles a year.

FOOD PAIRING:
For pairing with Verdejo, grilled sea bass is an excellent choice. Its mild, flaky texture complements the wine’s brightness, while a citrus salsa highlights Verdejo’s citrus and herbal notes, creating a harmonious blend of flavours.
